Resolute Bay Observatory (RBO) -
Resolute Bay, NU
Wildy Enterprises designed and constructed a cutting-edge, remotely operated 1.2MW prime power plant for a scientific research station in Resolute Bay, Nunavut.
The Resolute Bay Observatory facility operates in extreme Arctic conditions where the facility cold soaks to -40C and below and remotely resumes operation. This system includes deployment of a 20kW cold start battery energy storage system (BESS).
The BESS ensures uninterrupted power during bi-weekly cold soaks in the winter, where the radar installation and facility are placed in standby mode for energy conservation.
Resolute Bay Digital Design
The custom-designed BESS enables the facility to restart seamlessly after long periods of unuse, we pride ourselves on our innovations in engineering such a reliable system in one of the world’s most challenging environments.
Wildy also developed remote monitoring equipment, ensuring 24/7 oversight of operations.
Since 2018, Wildy has maintained an ongoing partnership with SRI International, acting as both the operations and maintenance contractor and the general contractor for this and many other projects.
For 75 years, SRI has led the discovery and design of ground-breaking products, technologies and industries – collaborating across technical and scientific disciplines to generate real innovation and create high value for our clients.
Working up North
The Resolute Bay Observatory (RBO) project, part of a multi-year collaboration with SRI International, highlights Wildy Enterprises’ expertise in managing complex logistics in extreme environments. For Phase 2 of the radar system, we handled all aspects of planning and logistics, ensuring everything needed for the project - materials, machinery, and personnel - was accounted for and delivered on time. Months of preparation went into creating a detailed inventory, which was then scheduled for transport via the annual sealift barge.
We ensured that all materials, including waterproofed concrete and specialized equipment, were packed to withstand Arctic conditions.
Once materials were on the barge, we coordinated air transport to match the delivery, ensuring our team arrived on-site when everything was ready. With no local supply stores, we made sure all necessary resources were shipped in advance, eliminating delays. We also worked with the local community to source labor and ensure smooth operations.
Wildy Enterprises' ability to manage logistics in such a remote location, with no room for error, ensured the project stayed on track and within budget.
